Comparing Cyprus Pink Slip vs permanent residency? Start with how you intend to live, support yourself and work—not simply how long you want the permit to last. A renewable visitor permit can suit an eligible person exploring life on the island. Permanent residence may offer greater continuity, but its conditions depend on the particular route.
For British nationals moving after Brexit, this decision deserves attention before committing to a home or departure date. Here we separate the visitor Pink Slip, Category F, investment-based permanent residence and long-term resident status, with practical questions to help you choose.
This guide concerns the Republic of Cyprus. EU-family rights and protected Withdrawal Agreement cases follow different frameworks. British residents covered by the Withdrawal Agreement should check that position first, rather than assuming they need a new visitor permit. See the UK government’s residence guidance.
What is a Cyprus Pink Slip?
“Pink Slip” is an informal expression. In this article it means the visitor-type Cyprus temporary residence permit for non-EU nationals, rather than every temporary permit issued in Cyprus.
The Migration Department describes the visitor route as covering holidays, touring and investigating residence. The usual first permit lasts one year and can be renewed if the conditions remain satisfied; passport validity can shorten it. Spouses and minor children have relevant dependent application categories. Read the official visitor guidance.
Cyprus Pink Slip requirements: plan the evidence
Use the current visitor application and supporting-document lists for your exact category. Ask your adviser to confirm the household income calculation, acceptable sources and bank evidence, accommodation documents, insurance, and any medical or criminal-record documents required for an initial application or renewal.
The current visitor checklist specifies €2,000 a month or €24,000 a year for one person, increased by 20% for a spouse and 15% for each child. It requires Cyprus bank transaction statements showing the relevant incoming funds. For a first permit, it also accepts an initial transfer or deposit of at least €10,000, with a customs declaration where a cash deposit applies. At renewal, the account balance must be at least €6,000, regardless of family size. These are different evidence requirements, not interchangeable figures.
Prepare proof of suitable accommodation and insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care and repatriation of remains. The checklist also requests a bank guarantee; criminal-record and Cyprus medical-examination certificates are specified for the first permit. Use the linked checklist for certification, translations and the documents relevant to your family.
Do not use the financial figures for Category F or the investment programme as a substitute for the visitor requirements. Likewise, do not assume a headline income figure alone proves eligibility. How the money is evidenced and whether it supports the whole household matter.
Working rights, renewal and travel
A visitor permit does not allow employment. Do not assume that an overseas employer or foreign-paying client automatically makes remote work permissible. Obtain a specific assessment; an employment or digital-nomad route may be more appropriate.
For Cyprus Pink Slip renewal, organise current evidence before expiry. The Department’s general advice is to apply at least one month beforehand. It also states that re-entry with a temporary permit and valid passport depends on not having stayed abroad for more than three months. Discuss travel while an application is pending separately. See the official residence-permit FAQs.

What is permanent residency in Cyprus?
“Cyprus permanent residency” covers several distinct legal routes. Their financial tests, working rights and family provisions are not interchangeable.
Cyprus Category F permanent residency
Category F is for people with sufficient secured income from abroad to live without engaging in business, trade or a profession in Cyprus. The Department publishes minimum annual figures of €9,568 for the applicant and €4,613 for each dependent. These are published minimums, not an approval promise or a realistic household budget.
This differs from the investment programme below: do not attach its €300,000 residential-purchase rule to Category F. Confirm current accommodation evidence and how your resources will be assessed. The official immigration-permits page explains Category F and the wider framework.
Cyprus fast-track permanent residency under Regulation 6(2)
The investment route requires at least €300,000 in a qualifying investment plus secured annual income of €50,000, increased by €15,000 for a spouse and €10,000 per dependent minor child.
For the residential-property option, the home must generally be a first sale from a development company, with €300,000 excluding VAT and VAT additional. Income for this option must come from abroad. Other qualifying categories cover certain non-residential property, company capital or investment funds, under separate conditions.
Spouses, minors and certain financially dependent unmarried student children aged 18–25 have specific provisions. Do not assume all adult relatives qualify. Employment is restricted, with defined company-director exceptions. Initial checks include criminal records and medical insurance. The Department gives an approximately two-month examination estimate for a complete qualifying application; that is not a guaranteed completion date. Read the full Regulation 6(2) policy before reserving a property.

Long-term resident status after qualifying residence
Long-term resident status is a separate application, not another name for Category F or an investor permit. Cyprus’s guidance starts with five years of legal, continuous residence and a valid permit. Absences normally must be shorter than six consecutive months and total no more than ten months within those five years.
Exclusions apply to certain temporary or restricted residence categories. Do not assume that five Pink Slip renewals automatically qualify: have the residence history, resources, insurance and applicable integration requirements checked. Consult the Cyprus long-term residence guidance and EU explanation of long-term resident status.
Cyprus Pink Slip vs Permanent Residency: key differences
Use this comparison to organise a consultation. “Permanent” does not mean unconditional, and immigration residence does not automatically establish tax residence.
| Question | Visitor Pink Slip | Category F | Regulation 6(2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Qualifying non-EU visitor | Independent overseas resources | Qualifying investor |
| Financial test | Current visitor checklist | Published minimums above; individual assessment | Investment and income tests above |
| Property | Confirm accommodation evidence | Confirm route-specific evidence | Investment option determines conditions |
| Duration | Usually one year initially | Permanent right, subject to conditions | Permanent right, subject to conditions |
| Renewal / monitoring | Renewable, with fresh evidence | Card replacement and continuing conditions | Card replacement and programme monitoring |
| Work | No employment | No business, trade or profession under this route | Restricted; defined director exceptions |
| Family | Dependent visitor categories | Spouse and minors under applicable rules | Route-specific dependent provisions |
| Presence | Check three-month absence rule | Permanent-permit conditions below | Permanent-permit conditions below |
| Application planning | Apply before lawful stay expires | Confirm current procedure and timings | Complete investment and evidence first |
Permanent permits still require attention
For immigration permits, the Department distinguishes the unlimited residence right from the adult card, normally replaced after ten years. Minors’ cards run to age 18. Its guidance also warns about failing to establish residence within a year of approval when abroad, acquiring permanent residence abroad, or an absence of two years.
For investors, later official monitoring clarifications removed annual income resubmission and changed criminal-record submission to every three years. Annual investment evidence and relevant insurance evidence where no longer covered by GeSY remain required. Maintain a compliance calendar rather than treating approval as the final task.

Which option is better for British expats?
The useful question is which route matches your circumstances and intended activities. There is no universal winner among Cyprus residency options for British citizens.
Retirees and financially independent movers
A retiree exploring Paphos may prefer to rent while deciding whether the area works throughout the year. Ask whether the visitor route fits that plan and what renewals and travel restrictions would mean in practice. Someone already committed to settling should also obtain a Category F assessment rather than assuming an investment purchase is essential.
Families and property buyers
A family considering a qualifying new home should review the investment route before signing. Map the spouse’s activities and each child’s age, studies and future plans. One parent’s eligibility does not answer every dependant’s position. Our guide to moving to Cyprus with children helps with the wider preparation.
People who need to work
If your budget depends on earning after arrival, put working permission first. A visitor or financially independent route should not be chosen merely because its paperwork appears simpler. Explain your actual work, clients, employer and business role to a qualified professional before selecting a route.
These are planning examples, not eligibility decisions. For wider Cyprus residency after Brexit preparation, see our guide to moving from the UK.

Can you move from a Pink Slip to permanent residency?
You can investigate a separate permanent application when your circumstances meet its conditions. Holding a temporary permit does not waive Category F or investment requirements, and the passage of time does not make an upgrade automatic.
Plan the transition carefully. The Department expressly states that submitting an immigration-permit application does not itself grant permission to stay or enter without a valid permit or visa. Keep your current status and travel arrangements under review while the new application is considered.
Common mistakes when choosing Cyprus residency
- Starting with a property brochure: ask for a route assessment before making an investment commitment.
- Mixing financial tests: visitor, Category F and investor figures serve different applications.
- Assuming foreign-paid work is automatically permitted: explain the activity itself, not just the bank account receiving payment.
- Ignoring absences: make overseas travel part of your permit-compliance plan.
- Preparing documents too late: ask about validity periods, certified translations, authentication and family evidence early.
- Confusing residence with tax: review both separately; read our Cyprus tax-residency guide for an introduction.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Pink Slip and permanent residency in Cyprus?
The visitor Pink Slip is renewable temporary permission. Permanent residence depends on a separate qualifying route and continuing conditions; it is not simply a longer visitor card.
Can British citizens get permanent residency in Cyprus?
Potentially, if they meet the applicable requirements. First check whether Withdrawal Agreement or family rights apply; otherwise assess the relevant non-EU route.
How long can you stay in Cyprus on a Pink Slip?
Follow the dates on the actual permit. A standard visitor permit is generally issued initially for one year, with renewal conditional on eligibility.
Can you work in Cyprus on a Pink Slip?
A visitor permit does not allow employment. Get a specific assessment before working, freelancing or assuming a foreign employer makes the activity permissible.
Do you need to buy property to get permanent residency?
Not every permanent route is the investment housing option. Have the route and accommodation requirements assessed before deciding whether to rent or purchase.
Is permanent residency better than a Pink Slip?
It may suit a settled long-term plan, but eligibility, resources, permitted activities and continuing obligations matter more than the label.
Does a Pink Slip automatically lead to permanent residency after five years?
No. Long-term resident status is a separate assessment with residence-history conditions and exclusions. Category F and investment residence also require separate eligibility.
How long does a residence application take?
The visitor page gives a usual examination period under four months when documents suffice. Investor guidance gives an approximately two-month estimate for a complete qualifying application. Neither is a guaranteed decision or card-delivery date; confirm current timings before committing.
Choose the route before committing to the move
The right Cyprus residence permit should support your household’s finances, working plans and everyday life. Establish the legal route first, then coordinate accommodation, documents and travel around it.
